Smart warns subscribers against SIM take-overs
Smart Communications has released an advisory against SIM take-over or SIM-hijacking due to the reported SIM swapping occurrence within the telco industry. The telco advises its customers to exercise caution to avoid falling victim to SIM take-overs and cybercriminals.
A SIM take-over occurs when someone attempts to transfer your mobile number associated with your SIM card to another SIM using social engineering techniques. Smart stated that it is similar to a virtual budol-budol, also referred to as "SIM-jacking" or "SIM-hijacking."
Additionally, Smart mentioned that if your account is compromised, the cyber-criminal will receive all text messages and phone calls intended to be received by your number. Cybercriminals can then exploit the gathered data to hack your online banking, email, and other accounts.
What to do if you fall victim to this SIM take-over scam?
- First, change the password or PIN of all your bank and digital accounts.
- Monitor your online banking accounts.
- Call Smart's customer service hotline *888 or visit the nearest Smart Store to deactivate the line temporarily
- Inform the relevant bank regarding the incident and report to the concerned authorities.
Moreover, Smart implements a pinless SIM swap process, which cross-checks and matches your mobile number and your device's unique 16-digit IMEI number. Further, the new SIM can be activated only on the previously used device with the old SIM, preventing unauthorized activation on other devices.
Smart's Pinless SIM Swap Process
Step 1: Insert the new SIM into the device. For Dual SIM devices, ensure it is inserted into the same SIM slot where the old SIM was mounted. An SMS prompt will be sent asking to key in the mobile number.
Step 2: Once done, the activated SIM will receive a confirmation SMS.
Safety precautions against SIM take-over scam
Remember, never give any sensitive information to strangers. Smart representatives will never ask for OTPs (one-time password).
Do not entertain calls from unknown sources. Report to the companies which the hackers claim to represent.
Smart Communications wants to convey its commitment to ensuring the security of its customers' data at all times. According to the telco, they already have a process to validate the identity of customers who visit their stores, with the added verification of the customer's photo or picture.
