LoL Worlds 2021 Grand Finals: China's EDG beat Korea's DK, 3-2
China's Edward Gaming (EDG) defeated South Korea's Damwon Kia (DK), 3-2, to claim the 2021 League of Legends World Championship title on November 6. The LoL Worlds 2021 was an offline esports event held at the Laugardalshöll Indoor Sporting Arena in Iceland, streamed online via Riot Games' official channels on YouTube and Twitch.
EDG won their first world championship, depriving DWG KIA of their second consecutive title. The Chinese underdogs have gone through grueling best-of-five grand finals to secure the victory and bag the largest share of USD 489,500 out of the tournament's USD 2,225,000 prize pool.
Team EDG dominated Game 1, defeating DK at the 35-minute mark of the match. The all-out performance of EDG in the first game resulted in a kills score of 16-4 and an 11.9k gold advantage.
The defending champions DK were able to get their revenge in Game 2, as they turned to more aggressive gameplay. ShowMaker's Malzahar and Canyon's Qiyana's strategic ultimates were able to give opportunities to the team to control game fights. After DK secured Baron at the 30-minute mark, the squad wiped out EDG and ultimately ended the second game under 33 minutes to make the series tied 1-1.
DK carried their momentum in Game 3, as they took down four from EDG at the 28-minute mark of the match and secured Baron at the 33-minute mark. DK ended the third game under 36 minutes to take a 2-1 lead in the series.
With their backs against the wall, EDG managed to recover in Game 4 by focusing on objectives. Within 9 minutes, EDG was able to snag both the Rift Herald and an Infernal Dragon, giving them an advantage in the early game. EDG Jiejie's Viego secured the team's fourth dragon at the 26-minute mark and first Baron at the 30-minute mark. EDG has successfully destroyed DK's Nexus with a Baron push at the 33-minute mark to force the finals to a do-or-die decider in game five.
The opening minutes of Game 5 were back and forth, as EDG got First Blood in a Rift Herald clash, though DK got the Herald. EDG's mid laner Scout dominated the game with his Zoe, taking advantage of great poke and pinpoint precision with his Sleepy Trouble Bubbles and Paddlestars. EDG also focused on the objectives, taking down Elder Dragon at the 36-minute mark. Despite a desperate push by DK, EDG outplayed them to secure the 3-2 win and claim their first-ever Summoner's Cup.
With their victory, EDG took home the grand prize of USD 489,500. Moreover, Scout was named the Finals MVP.
Meanwhile, runners-up DK earned USD 333,750 in consolation.
