According to Ookla's October 2021 Speedtest Global Index, the Philippines' average mobile internet download speed is 18.21 Mbps, while the average fixed broadband download speed is 45.52 Mbps. These results are based on the median performance, the latest statistical measure used by the internet testing firm.
As per Ookla, the Speedtest Global Index is now ranked by median download speed to more accurately reflect the speeds that a user is likely to experience in a market. Additionally, the mean performance can be viewed only until February 15, 2022. After that, only median data will be available.
The Philippines is at rank 94 in mobile and 71 in fixed broadband based on the median performance. Meanwhile, the country ranks 67th for both mobile and fixed broadband based on the mean performance, recording 38.12 Mbps in mobile and 71.08 Mbps in fixed broadband.
Moreover, Ookla explained that the median is a metric that accurately represents the typical user experience. In statistical terms, the median is less likely than the mean to be influenced by outliers. The chart below illustrates how the median and mean results return significantly different values when a simple number set of ten values is considered.
The switch from mean to the median in the Speedtest Global Index notably alters the global rankings. For example, take a look at the top ten list below.
Regarding data gathering, Speedtest Global Index considers at least 300 unique user results for mobile or fixed broadband to be ranked in either category, leveraging a massive testing infrastructure with over 10,000 servers in more than 190 countries.
