Globe Telecom strengthens anti-SMS spam efforts
Globe Telecom's anti-spam and anti-scam efforts continue to be bolstered by a dedicated cybersecurity team that has successfully deactivated 5,670 confirmed spam numbers and blocked close to 71 million spam messages this year.
"We take unsolicited and fraudulent messages seriously," said Anton Bonifacio, Globe Chief Information Security Officer. "Protecting Globe customers from these scams remains a top business priority."
Bonifacio added that the company had invested an additional USD 7.25 million in CAPEX since the pandemic began solely to continue enhancing Globe's anti-spam capabilities.
The telco's specialized teams are part of a larger internal Cybersecurity and Data Privacy group that investigates spam complaints and takes preventative action against spammers and scammers.
Globe terminates and blocks a significant number of spammers detected on its systems, including those reported via Globe's Stop Spam page (www.globe.com.ph/stopspam).

Moreover, Globe has partnered with major universal and commercial banks, as well as Lazada and Shopee, to reduce not only spam but also scams and phishing activities, thereby ensuring the network's customers' security. These partner companies report fake numbers, spoofed sender names, and websites, which Globe immediately blocks on its network.
Globe stressed that, while it is doing everything possible to combat spam on the network side, customers also have tools available on the "device" side. For example, customers can use Google's "Messages" app as their default Android SMS messenger because it includes highly effective built-in spam filters, similar to those found in "Google Mail."
In a Facebook post, Globe also provided tips on what to do if you're getting multiple messages from unknown numbers. The first is, use your phone's built-in SMS blocker. Next is, report them to NTC or Globe's Stop Spam page.
Globe is fully aware of the inconveniences and associated problems that such text messaging scams can cause and has increased its efforts to ensure that all customers have a spam-free experience.
To recall, the telco has strengthened its data protection policy to stop scams such as "deceptive phishing" and "smishing."
